Microsoft 365 Groups - Understanding Group Expiration

Microsoft 365 Groups automatically expire after a period of inactivity unless renewed.

Expiration Policy

CCPS Microsoft 365 Groups expire after 365 days.

Owners receive renewal notifications:

  • 30 days before expiration
  • 15 days before expiration
  • 1 day before expiration

If a group expires, IT can restore it for up to 30 days.


Automatic Renewal

Groups are automatically renewed when they are actively used.

Examples of qualifying activity include:

  • Uploading or editing SharePoint files
  • Reading or writing Outlook group messages
  • Visiting a Microsoft Teams channel
  • Viewing or responding to Microsoft Forms
  • Interacting with Viva Engage

Important

If a group expires, associated resources such as the mailbox, SharePoint site, Microsoft Teams workspace, and other connected services are also deleted and moved to retention.
