Microsoft 365 Groups automatically expire after a period of inactivity unless renewed.
Expiration Policy
CCPS Microsoft 365 Groups expire after 365 days.
Owners receive renewal notifications:
- 30 days before expiration
- 15 days before expiration
- 1 day before expiration
If a group expires, IT can restore it for up to 30 days.
Automatic Renewal
Groups are automatically renewed when they are actively used.
Examples of qualifying activity include:
- Uploading or editing SharePoint files
- Reading or writing Outlook group messages
- Visiting a Microsoft Teams channel
- Viewing or responding to Microsoft Forms
- Interacting with Viva Engage
Important
If a group expires, associated resources such as the mailbox, SharePoint site, Microsoft Teams workspace, and other connected services are also deleted and moved to retention.
