Passwords: How to complete your Office 365 password recovery registration

The first time that you log into Office 365, you may be required to add information so that you may recover your password if you ever need to. Below are directions to complete this process: 

 

  1. From the Office 365 login page, enter your username (full e-mail address) and password and then click on Sign in.  You will then be presented with a window similar to the following screenshot:

  2. Click on Set it up now.  The following screen will then be presented to you:

  3. From this screen, you will set up options to verify your identity in the event that you forget your password.  There are three options for verification including e-mail, telephone and security questions. 

    You must set up at least one security option.  You may set up two or all three options if you wish.  To configure each option, click on the
    Set it up now link next to the option you wish to configure.

    Authentication phone:
    When you select this option, the following screen will be presented to you:

    Select United States as your country and then enter the area code and number of the phone that you wish to use for authentication.  You will then have the choice to have a text or phone call to validate your phone.

    If you select the call option, your telephone will ring and a recording will ask you to press the pound (#) key.  Once you do so, your phone registration will be complete and your screen will return to the previous window.  There will be a green checkmark next to the telephone option signifying that the phone registration is complete.  

    If you select the text option, a text message will be sent to the phone number that you entered.  Enter the code that is sent to you into the verification code field on your screen and then click the verify button. 

    Once you do so, your phone registration will be complete and your screen will return to the previous window.  There will be a green checkmark next to the telephone option signifying that the phone registration is complete. 

    Authentication e-mail:
    When you select this option, the following screen will be presented to you:

    Enter the e-mail address that you wish to use.  You cannot use your CCPS e-mail address.  It must be a personal e-mail address. 

    After you enter your e-mail address, click on the e-mail me button.  An e-mail will then be sent to your account with a verification code.  Enter the code that is sent to you into the verification code field on your screen and then click the verify button. 

    Once you do so, your e-mail registration will be complete and your screen will return to the previous window.  There will be a green checkmark next to the Email option signifying that the Email registration is complete.
     

    Security Questions:
    When you select this option, the following screen will be presented to you:

    From this screen, you must choose five different questions from the drop down lists and provide answers for each.  Each answer must be a minimum of three characters and you may not repeat the same answer more than once. 

    Once you have answered all five questions, your screen will look similar to the following:

    Click on the save answers button. 

    Once you do so, your security question registration will be complete and your screen will return to the previous window.  There will be a green checkmark next to the Security Questions option signifying that the registration is complete.
     

You can now safely close the web page and your registration is complete.
